BLACKOUT is, without doubt, the most bittersweet book I’ve ever written. The Breakers series — and everyone who’s read them — gave me my career. I’ve lived (and in some cases died!) with these characters for the last four years of my life. The series is a million words in total. It’s taken me well over 3000 hours of work. After that much time spent in this world, it’s going to be incredibly hard to leave it behind.

As an author, it’s always tempting to stick with a series for as long as people keep buying it. But I wanted to go out on a high note. To finish the series before it had the chance to get stale. As much fun as it is to live in this world, all of the best stories have an ending.

As I neared the end of BLACKOUT, I started my work day at 9 AM. By the time I stopped, it was 4 AM, I’d written thirty pages — far more than I’ve ever written before — and finished the book. Because I couldn’t wait to find out where everyone was going to wind up.

I’m sad to leave Breakers behind. But giving an ending to these characters has been my proudest moment as an author.

Don’t worry, I’ll still be writing for a long time. I might even revisit this world some day. For now, though, we’ve reached the end of the road.

Thanks for reading.

I have yet to down load the book, but I will very shortly. I am so looking forward to reading the last installment. I got hooked with a freebie from BookBub and never stopped reading for about a month. I am excited.

  • Scott Dyson says:

Great finale! It stayed true to the characters and the tone of the whole series! If you’re interested, I put up a mini-review of it and REBEL on my site:

    • Ed Robertson says:

Thank you! I really appreciate the reviews–it’s a lot of fun to see those out in the wild. By the way, the other book is now called TITANS. I made a few revisions before re-releasing it.

      • Scott Dyson says:

That’s the one! I made the correction in the review. Looking forward to OUTLAW and to your brother’s work as well. (That one sounded like it’s right in my post-apocalyptic wheelhouse…)

  • Something to look forward to on payday! I am taking a week or two to recharge before jumping back on my series, and hope to reach the quality you write with Edward.
You’ve got a good bit out there at the moment, so I am gearing up to read the sci-fi series as well, once I finish Breakers off!!

  • Bob K says:

I just recently finished up listening to “CUT OFF” through Audible and was hoping to learn when I could look forward to books 6/7/8 available in an Audio version. Any insights into this would be welcome!

  • Ed,

As the author of apocalyptic fiction myself I thoroughly get what you said about ending a series. You’ve lived in that world for years. It’s characters have become old friends and it’s both hard and rewarding to say goodbye. I’m currently putting the finishing touches on the third book in my Dying Time trilogy and I’ve already decided I’m going to start a new series I’ll call Prepper World setting the characters in my Dying Time universe. Maybe you could do something like that with Breakers?

I just read Titans and gave it five stars on Amazon and wanted to tell you that you have earned a new fan. That book put me in mind of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein, because it was filled with so many great and memorable lines. Keep up the good work man. I’m off to read Breakers now.

Wish you would publish graphics to accompany the text! I’m on volume 8 but still haven’t conceptualized the image of the swimmers. Great books! I’m so sad the series is ending.

  • Christian C says:

Just finished reading the whole series….. That was amazing!! Hands down one of my favorite! I’m going to miss these characters! Just finished Book 0 of the Rebel series and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Hopefully we can get a 8.5 book to talk about what happens to Ness and Sebastion :)

    Keep writing amazing stories!!
